Innovative Offices: Going Bottled-Water Free

Many offices purchase bottles or cans of still and sparkling water for employees. A more sustainable alternative is the use of taps that serve chilled still and sparkling tap water, such as taps provided by Join the Pipe. This study evaluated the economic, environmental and social impacts of a Join the Pipe tap in comparison to ordering cans of sparkling water for an office of 150 employees in Amsterdam.

What We Measured

• Cost comparisons between cans of water and the capital and maintenance costs of the Join the Pipe tap (total payback time and ongoing cost savings over a 5 year period)
• Environmental impacts (waste and carbon dioxide emissions diverted) based on the avoidance of aluminum cans of sparkling water
• Employee feedback and perception about the switch from cans of sparkling water to the Join the Pipe tap
